Be Enlightened
Each and every one of us is different. Each has a different vision, different perceptions of life, different manners, different qualities, and different faults. Some people are calm, some logical, reserved, or posed. Others are more high strurg, excited, always ready for a party. A few are adventurers, courageous, heading for the impossible, sometimes almost crazy. All of them have different impact on the society, make the things happen, change the more or less change the world.
Let us say that, extravagance and apparent crazy ideas are the beginning of discovery; indeed if you do not aim high, you will not look ahead either. Hazard and luck can also play a role in discoveries. A good example is the one of Alexander Fleming. In 1928, while working on a virus, he observed that mould had developed accidentally on a staphylococcus culture plate and that the mould had created a bacteria-free circle around itself. He was inspired to further experiment and he found that a mould culture prevented growth of staphylococci, even when diluted eight hundred times. It was a discovery that would change the course of History. The active ingredient in that mould, which Fleming named penicillin, turned out to be an infection-fighting agent of enormous potency. When it was finally recognized for what it was — the most efficient life-saving drug in the world — penicillin would alter forever the treatment of bacterial infections. In short, he found a medecine watching mustiness. Fleming was a man who, to say the least, was a bit uncommon, still he caused an incredible advance to our society. Without his extravagance and his bizarre ideas, millions of people would have possibly died, especially during the Second World War. Even today, penicillin is one of the most used antibiotics.
However, scientists may wish to improve the world but attain instead to make it worse. When Albert Einstein, J. Robert Oppenheimer and their expert team created the atomic bomb, on August 2, 1939, they thought they were doing the right thing, no doubt. Today, we know how much that discovery was and still is devastating to our world. Meanwhile, it is of common knowledge how much atomic energy can be useful and one of the most energetic things ever created. It seems that a single atom could make a car work for more than a hundred years. It was worth it. The dicovery itself is one thing but its use is something else altoghether. It becomes a matter of ethics.
Actually, the kind of person that is very perseverant, exuberant and determined is the one that has better chances to reach his goals. People such as Thomas Alva Edison, tested over three thousands filaments before he came up with his version of a practical light bulb. He led no armies into battle, he conquered no countries, and he enslaved no people. Nonetheless, he exerted a degree of power the magnitude of which no warrior ever dreamed of. His name still commands a respect as sweeping in scope worldwide as that of any other man. As he said: "Be brave as your fathers before you. Have faith and go forward"
Yes, people who are very ingenious, imaginative and passionate change the world. People like Albert Einstein, Enrico Fermi, Alexander Fleming, Sigmund Freud, Edwin Hubble and Wilbur & Orville Wright are good examples. They all could have said: “It is a small step for human but a big one for humanity”. They are the kind of people who change our society. Still, everybody is different and unique. Every person has special talents, special qualities. People are not replaceable parts. Each person has a different background, different preferences for the way in which they work, and different cognitive style. People are put together to compliment each other’s differences, and that makes the world unique.
